While I may be a bit biased, York is one of the greatest cities in the world. It’s a perfect balance of new and old, which makes it the ideal city to live in. York Fashion Week was my opportunity to explore more of York itself and the incredible people who live and work in beauty, fashion, marketing, and photography in the Yorkshire area.

York Fashion Week 2018

With over 40 events across the city, York Fashion Week had an event for everyone. From children’s events at the Castle Museum to Nayna McIntosh’s inspiring talk about fashion for women over 50, York Fashion Week was about sharing the incredible talent that Yorkshire offers.

"York Fashion Week is supporting both independent and high street brands. An exciting and diverse week featuring workshops, runway shows, pop up shops and more. And with brands involved such as Browns, LK Bennett, Antonia Houston Couture, Unostar, Copper & White, and Rose & Flo – there is something for all fashion lovers to explore and enjoy." from York Fashion Week website

Each of the seven days was filled with potential and I was excited for every event I went to. Whether it was attending my first high tea at Gray’s Court or at exclusive shopping events throughout the city, I was ecstatic and so grateful to be a part of York’s first Fashion Week! Working with the other bloggers and alongside professionals was an absolutely surreal experience. Everyone I met was so eager to collaborate and share their (forgive the cliché) passion for fashion.

A York Fashion Week Ambassador

I reached out to Fashion City York on a whim, honestly not expecting much in response. But suddenly I was invited to the brochure launch, met with the other amazing ambassadors, and helped to plan out what events to attend and how to best cover the week on social media. I was immediately treated with such respect and kindness by every person involved with Fashion Week. Being an ambassador wasn’t about how many followers you had, but rather using your unique talents to be a part of something special. I remember introducing myself at the brochure launch as “someone with a little Instagram that hoped to be involved in some way,” and having Nicky smile at me and say, “Gabbi, you’re more than just your Instagram.”

Throughout the week, I was constantly pinching myself and couldn’t believe that I was allowed to be so closely involved with a fashion week. As a Medieval Studies MA student, I started an Instagram microblog a few months ago because I was interested in fashion to distract from the rigour of my academic work, and now I was helping to represent York Fashion Week to both local and high-street businesses.

My experience as a York Fashion Week Ambassador can only be described as inspiring. With the gracious treatment and support that I have received from everyone involved with YFW, I have made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

I would like to thank everyone that let me be a part of this historic Fashion Week. Especially Nicky from NIMA, Olivia Brabbs, Angela from Fashion City York, and my gorgeous fellow Ambassadors: Deborah, Elise, Natalie, Phoebe, Nelli, and Ciandra.

Without their support and eagerness to include me, I would have never been involved in this. If you’re interested in being involved in York Fashion Week 2019, I highly suggest to reach out and get involved!

In my upcoming posts, I will be sharing things like: specifics about my favorite events, what I wore to York Fashion Week, my favorite products, and, finally, what I learned from this experience!
